“Cousin Kate” by Christina Rossetti Essay

The Four texts that will be witnessed throughout the essay are : Cousin Kate by Christina Rossetti, Porphyria’s lover by Robert Browning, To his Coy Mistress by Andrew Marvel and Romeo Juliet by William Shakespeare. Romeo and Juliet is about two lovers – who adore each other so much, similarily Porphyria’s lover is about a man who loves Porphria so much, which leads on to him killing her. Then, To his Coy Mistress was when the narrator slept with the lady and had sex, similarily Cousin Kate was similar as the narrator had sex with one person then betrayed her for someone else for the money. In Act 1 Scene 1 of Romeo and Julliet. Romeo looks to be very (Obsessed) with Rosaline. Rosaline is the girl that Romeo fell in love with very deeply. Montague describes how deeply and Distraught Romeo is feeling to the fact that Rosaline does not love Romeo back. He doesn’t want to show his family and friends what is happening but he keeps on sobbing. a poem about a young girl who ge Also In Act 1 Scene 1 Teenage Love is shown between Romeo and Rosaline. He expresses a very deep action in the depth of love like a Teenager. Romeo, we find out, has been moping around in a â€Å"grove of sycamore,† which, by the way, is Shakespeare’s way of hinting that Romeo is love sick or â€Å"sick amour†. This shows a lovesick teenager. Romeo wanders in and willingly tells Benvolio that he’s in love with a girl who doesn’t love him back. He is embarrassed and scared to tell just like a teenager. Furthermore, In Act 1 Scene 5 – Romeo changes dramatically, when he meets Juliet and his love with Rosaline had all vanished. He says that he has never seen a ‘True Beauty’ till this night – like Juliet. This shows that he was not in love with Rosaline and tells that he is a very unloyal love with people. Juliet had sparked Romeo’s eye very deeply and had attached on Romeo’s heart. Although, the infatuation in Act1 Scene1 was very deep into the love with Rosaline. This shows the love of young teenager who doesn’t know what a true love is and can get easily captured by a lot of love relationships. This in teenagers perspective is very true and a very common thing that happens in teenage love. Romeo is a very fickle teenager when it comes to Love. Romeo is a very fickle character because one he is love with one person which was Rosaline then changes his love to Juliet. The quote that shows is ‘I’ve never seen a true beauty till this night’. This shows how a different person he can get in matter of time. This also links with his teenage love attitude. Moreover, In act1 Scene 5 – Romeo and Juliet when they first meet is very strong and eye catchyFrom across the room, Romeo sees Juliet, and asks a servingman who she is. The servingman does not know. Romeo is transfixed; Rosaline vanishes from his mind and he declares that he has never been in love until this moment. Moving through the crowd, Tybalt hears and recognizes Romeo’s voice Then Romeo touches Juliet’s hand.

Stefan’s Diaries: Bloodlust Chapter 8~9

Chapter 8 October 4, 1864 As a human, I'd thought it was my mother's death that had shaped the men Damon and I would become. I'd called myself a half-orphan in the initial days after she died, locking myself away in my room, feeling as though my life had ended at the young age of ten. Father believed grieving was weak and unmanly, so Damon had been the one to comfort me. He'd go riding with me, let me join the older boys in their games, and beat up the Giffin brothers when they made fun of me for crying about Mother during a baseball game. Damon had always been the strong one, my protector. But I was wrong. It is my own death that has shaped me. Now the tables have turned. I am the strong one, and I have been trying to be Damon's protector. But while I have always been grateful to Damon, he despises me and blames me for what he has become. I had forced him to feed from Alice, a bartender at the local tavern, which had completed his transformation. But does that make me a villain? I think not, especially as the act had saved his life. Finally, I see Damon the way Father had seen him: too imperious, too willful, too quick to make up his mind, and too slow to change it. And as I had also realized earlier this evening as I stood just outside the dim glare of the gas lamp, the body of the dead nurse at my feet: I am alone. A full orphan. Just as Katherine had presented herself when she came to Mystic Falls and stayed in our guesthouse. So that's how vampires do it, then. They exploit vulnerability, get humans to trust them, and then, when all the emotions are firmly in place, they attack. So that is what I will do. I know not how or who my next victim will be, but I know, more than ever, that the only person I can look out for and protect is myself. Damon is on his own, and so am I. I heard Damon steal through the city, moving at vampire speed down the streets and alleys. At one point, he paused, whispering Katherines name over and over again, like a mantra or a prayer. Then, nothing Was he dead? Had he drowned himself? Or was he simply too far away for me to hear him? Either way, the result was the same. I was alone–Id lost my only connection to the man Id once been: Stefan Salvatore, the dutiful son, the lover of poetry, the man who stood up for what was right. I wondered if that meant that Stefan Salvatore, with no one to remember him, was really, truly dead, leaving me to be anyone. I could move to a different city every year, see the whole world. I could assume as many identities as Id like. I could be a Union soldier. I could be an Italian businessman. I could even be Damon. The sun plunged past the horizon like a cannonball falling to earth, dipping the city into darkness. I turned from one gaslit street to the next, the soles of my boots rasping over the gravelly cobblestones. A loose newspaper blew toward me. I stomped on the broadsheet, examining an etched photo of a girl with long, dark hair and pale eyes. She looked vaguely familiar. I wondered if she was a relative of one of the Mystic Falls girls. Or perhaps a nameless cousin whod attended barbecues at Veritas. But then I saw the headline:BRUTAL MURDER ABOARD THE ATLANTIC EXPRESS. Lavinia. Of course. Id already forgotten her. I reached down and crumpled the paper, hurling it as far as I could into the Mississippi. The surface of the water was muddy and turbulent, dappled with moonlight. I couldnt see my reflection–couldnt see anything but an abyss of blackness as deep and dark as my new future. Could I go for eternity, feeding, killing, forgetting, then repeating the cycle? Yes. Every instinct and impulse I had screamedyes. The triumph of closing in on my prey, touching my canines to the paper-thin skin that covered their necks, hearing their hearts slow to a dull thud and feeling a body go limp in my arms. Hunting and feeding made me feel alive, whole; they gave me a purpose in the world. It was, after all, the natural order of things. Animals killed weaker animals. Humans killed animals. I killed humans. Every species had their foe. I shuddered to think what monster was powerful enough to hunt me. The salty breeze wafting from the water was laced with the odor of unwashed bodies and rotting food–a far cry from the aroma across town, where scents of floral perfume and talcum powder hung heavy in the air of the wide streets. Here shadows hugged every corner, whispers rose and fell with the flowing of the river, and drunken hiccups pierced the air. It was dark, here. Dangerous. I quite liked it. I turned a corner, following my nose like a bloodhound on the trail of a doe. I flexed my arms, ready for a hunt–a gin-soaked drunk, a soldier, a lady out after dark. The victim didnt matter. I turned again, and the iron-scent of blood came closer. The smell was sweet and smoky. I focused on it, on the anticipation of sinking my fangs into a neck, of wondering whose blood Id be drinking, whose life Id be stealing. I continued to walk, picking up my pace as I traced the scent to an anonymous back street lined with an apothecary, a general store, and a tailor. The street was a replica of our own Main Street back in Mystic Falls. But while wed only had one, New Orleans must have had dozens, if not hundreds, of these corridors of commerce. The rusty smell of iron was stronger now. I followed twists and turns, my hunger building, burning, searing my very skin until finally, finally I came to a squat, peach-colored building. But when I saw the painted sign above the door, I stopped short. Sausages in their casings hung in the buildings grimy window; slabs of cured meat dangled from the ceiling like a grotesque childs mobile; carved ribs were nestled in ice beneath a counter, and in the far back, whole carcasses were strung up, draining blood into large vats. This was a butcher shop? I sighed in frustration but my hunger forced me to push the door open anyway. The iron chain snapped easily, as if it were no sturdier than thread. Once inside, I gazed at the bloodied carcasses, momentarily mesmerized by the blood falling into the vats, one drip at a time. Over the sound of the raining blood, I heard the slightestping, no louder than the twitch of a mouses whiskers. Then came the light shuffle of toes passing over concrete. I reared back, my eyes darting from corner to corner. Mice scuttled beneath the floorboards, and someones watch ticked in the building next door. All else was quiet. But the air around me suddenly felt thicker, and the ceiling lower somehow, and I became acutely aware that there was no back exit in this room of death. â€Å"Who goes there?† I called into the darkness, whirling around, my fangs bared. And then came movement. Fangs, eyes, the thud of footsteps closed in around me from all corners. A low, guttural growl echoed off the bloodstained walls of the shop, and I realized with a sickening jolt that I was surrounded by vampires who looked all too ready to pounce. Chapter 9 I crouched low, my fangs elongated. The heady scent of blood permeated every corner of the room, making my head spin. It was impossible to know where to attack first. The vampires growled again, and I emitted a low snarl in response. The circle closed in tighter around me. There were three of them, and I was caught, like a fish in a net, a deer surrounded by wolves. â€Å"What do you think youre doing?† one of the vampires asked. He looked to be in his mid-twenties and had a scar that ran the length of his face, from his left eye to the corner of his lip. â€Å"Im one of you,† I said, standing at my full height, fangs on display. â€Å"Oh, hes one of us!† an older vampire said in a sing-songy voice. He wore glasses and a tweed vest over a white-collared shirt. But for the fangs and red-rimmed eyes, he could have been an accountant or a friend of my fathers. I kept my face impassive. â€Å"I have no ill business with you, brothers.† â€Å"We are not your brothers,† said another with tawny hair. He looked not a day over fifteen. His face was smooth, but his green eyes were hard. The older one stepped forward, poking his bony finger against my chest as if it were a wooden stake. â€Å"So, brother, nice evening to dine or die. What do you think?† The young vampire kneeled next to me, gazing into my eyes. â€Å"Looks like hell do both tonight. Lucky boy,† he said, ruffling my hair. I tried to kick him, but my foot simply flopped harmlessly against air. â€Å"No, no, no.† While the scarred vampire watched wordlessly, the boy grabbed my arms and wrenched them so sharply and abruptly behind my back that I gasped. â€Å"Dont be disrespectful. Were your elders. And youve already done quite enough disrespecting already, if Miss Mollys house is any indication.† He drawled her name as if he were a benign, genteel Southern gentleman. Only the steel grip on my limbs betrayed that he wasnt anything of the sort. â€Å"I didnt do anything,† I said, kicking again. If I were to die, then Id die in a fight. â€Å"Are you sure?† he asked, looking down at me in disgust. I attempted to twist away, but still I couldnt budge. The elder vampire chuckled. â€Å"Cant control his urges. Impulsive, this one. Lets give him a taste of his own medicine.† With a flourish, he released me from his grasp, pushing me forward with strength Id never before felt. I hit the plaster wall with a crash and fell on my shoulder, my head cracking against the wooden floorboards. I cowered beneath my attackers, the realization sinking in that if I were to survive this encounter, it would not be by might. â€Å"I didnt mean to do anything. Im sorry,† I said, my voice breaking on the word. â€Å"Do you mean it?† the young vampire asked, a glint in his eye. The sound of wood breaking assaulted my ears. I flinched. Would one vampire stake another? This was not a question I wanted answered the hard way. â€Å"Yes. Yes! I didnt mean to come in here. I didnt know anyone was here. I only just arrived in New Orleans,† I said, scrambling for an excuse. â€Å"Silence!† he commanded, advancing toward me, a jagged piece of wood in his hand. I pressed my spine into the damaged wall. So this is how it would end. With me dying on a makeshift stake, killed by my own kind. Two hands crushed my arms, while another two pinned my ankles together so forcefully that it felt as though I were stuck under boulders. I closed my eyes. An image of Father lying prone on his study floor swam to the forefront of my mind, and I shook my head in agony, remembering his sweating, terrified face. Of course, Id been trying to save him, but he hadnt known that. If he was watching, as an angel or a demon or a mere specter condemned to haunt the world, hed be thrilled to see this scene unfold. I squeezed my eyes tighter, trying to evoke some other memory to the fore of my mind, one that would take me to another place, another time. But all I could think of were my victims, of the moment when my fangs sliced into their skin, their plaintive wails descending into silence, the blood dripping down my fangs and onto my chin. Soon, all the blood Id taken would be released, seeping out of my own body and back into the Earth, as I was left to die, for real this time, forever, on this wooden floor. â€Å"Enough!† A female voice sliced through the montage in my mind. Immediately, the vampires let go of my hands and feet. My eyes sprang open, and I saw a woman gliding through a narrow wooden door in the back. Her long blond hair descended in a single plait down her back, and she wore mens black pants and suspenders. She was tall, though slight as a child, and all the other vampires shrank away from her in fear. â€Å"You,† she said, kneeling next to me. â€Å"Who are you?† Her amber eyes gazed into mine. They were clear and curious, but there was something about them–the darkness of the pupils, perhaps–that seemed ancient and knowing, which stood in sharp contrast to her rosy-cheeked, unlined face. â€Å"Stefan Salvatore,† I answered her. â€Å"Stefan Salvatore,† she repeated in a perfect Italian accent. Although teasing, her voice didnt seem unkind. She ran a finger gently along my jaw, then placed her palm against my chest and she pressed me against the wall, hard. The suddenness of the movement stunned me, but as I sat, pinned and helpless, she brought her other wrist to her mouth, using her fang to puncture the vein. She dragged her wrist along her teeth, creating a small stream of blood. â€Å"Drink,† she commanded, bringing her wrist to my lips. I did as I was told, managing to get a few drops of the liquid down my throat before she yanked her hand away. â€Å"Thats enough. That should fix your wounds at any rate.† â€Å"He and his brother have been wreaking havoc all over town,† the large vampire said, his makeshift stake pointed at me like a rifle. â€Å"Just me,† I said quickly. â€Å"My brother had no part in it.† Damon would never survive the wrath of these demons. Not in his weakened state. The blond vampire wrinkled her nose as she leaned even closer toward me. â€Å"Youre what, a week old?† she asked, leaning back on her heels. â€Å"Almost two weeks,† I said defiantly, lifting my chin. She nodded, a hint of a smile on her lips, and stood, surveying the shop. The plaster wall was partially caved in, and blood smeared the floor and speckled the walls, as though a child had stood in the center of the room and twirled around with a wet paintbrush. She tsked, and the three male vampires simultaneously took a step back. I shivered. â€Å"Percy, come here, and bring that knife,† she said. With a sigh, the youngest vampire produced a long carving knife from behind his back. â€Å"He wasnt following the rules,† he said petulantly, reminding me of the Giffin boys back home. They were both bullies, always ready to kick a kid in the schoolyard and then turn around and tell a teacher they had nothing to do with it. She took the knife and stared at it, running the pad of her index finger over the gleaming blade. Then she held it back out to Percy. He hesitated a moment, but finally stepped forward to take it. Just then the girls canines elongated and her eyes flushed bloodred. With a growl, she stabbed Percy right in the chest. He fell to his knees, doubled over in silent agony. â€Å"You hunt this vampire for making a scene in town,† she seethed, stabbing the knife in farther, â€Å"and yet you attempt to destroy him in this public space, in this shop? Youre just as foolish as he is.† The young vampire staggered to his feet. Blood streamed down the front of his shirt, as though hed spilled coffee on himself. He grimaced as he pulled the knife out with a sucking sound. â€Å"Im sorry,† he gasped. â€Å"Thank you.† The woman held her wrist toward Percys mouth. Despite her youthful look and apparently violent temper, she also had a mothering quality that the other vampires seemed to accept, as if her stabbings were as normal to them as a light swat would be to a high-spirited child. She turned toward me. â€Å"Im sorry for your troubles, Stefan. Now, can I help you be on your way?† she asked. I looked around wildly. Id thought no further ahead than escaping this room. â€Å"I â€Å" â€Å". . . dont have anywhere to go,† she said with a sigh, finishing my thought. She glanced toward the other vampires, who were now huddled in the corner of the room, heads bent in conversation. â€Å"Ill just be going,† I said, struggling to my feet. My leg was fine, but my arms shook, and my breath came erratically. With local vampires watching my every move, where would I go? How would I feed? â€Å"Nonsense, youre coming with us,† she said, turning on her heel and walking out the door. She pointed to the young vampire and the one who wore glasses. â€Å"Percy and Hugo, stay and clean this place up.† I had to practically run to keep up with her and the tall, scarred vampire whod watched my torture. â€Å"Youll need someone to show you around,† she explained, pausing only slightly. â€Å"This is Buxton,† she said, grabbing the elbow of the vampire with the long scar. We walked down street after street until we neared a church with a tall spire. â€Å"Were here,† she said, turning sharply to enter a wrought-iron gate. Her boots echoed against a slate path that led to the rear of a house. She opened the door, and a musty scent greeted me. Buxton immediately walked through the parlor and up a set of stairs, leaving me and the young female vampire alone in the darkness. â€Å"Welcome home,† she said, spreading her hands wide. â€Å"There are plenty of spare rooms upstairs. Find one that suits you.† â€Å"Thank you.† As my eyes adjusted to the darkness, I took in my surroundings. Black velvet curtains fastened with golden rope blocked every window. Dust motes floated in the air, and gilt-framed paintings covered the walls. The furniture was threadbare, and I could just make out two sweeping staircases with what looked like oriental runners and, in the next room, a piano. Though at one point this must have been a grand house, now the soiled walls were cracked and peeling, and cobwebs draped over the gold-and-crystal chandelier above us. â€Å"Always enter through the back. Never draw back the curtains. Dont ever bring anyone here. Do you understand, Stefan?† She looked at me pointedly. â€Å"Yes,† I said, running a finger along the marble fireplace, cutting a path in the inch-thick dust. â€Å"Then I think you will like it here,† she said. I turned to face her, nodding in agreement. My panic had subsided, and my arms no longer trembled. â€Å"Im Lexi,† she said, holding out her hand, allowing me to raise it to my lips and kiss it. â€Å"I have a feeling that you and I will be friends for a long time.†

Catch

Heller’s novel was able to become so popular because readers use the characters as a comparison of how patriotism should be, and the attitudes of the soldiers during World War II illustrates how idealism needs to change. The attitudes of characters in Catch 22 are far from our normal perception of patriotic. For example, the main character, Yossarian fakes injuries in order to stay the in hospital, because he does not want to risk his life in battle. He complains saying things such as â€Å"I think it’s my appendix bothering me† (Heller 176) and â€Å" then I’ll just go back to the hospital† when he is soon to encounter another battle. Yossarian is so unpatriotic that he even â€Å" goes absent without official leave from Milo† (Heller 405). Many characters in Heller’s novel simply have no motivation to serve and protect their country. One soldier states, â€Å" there’s no patriotism, that’s what it is. And no matriotism, either† (Heller 123). Compared to the time period in which the novel was written, this mind set is unacceptable. Yossarian has such a negative attitude, it is even stated â€Å"morale was deteriorating and it was all Yossarian’s fault However, there are characters in the story that are used as comparison to Yossarian, and show the level of morality people would have expected during the time period in which the novel was published. Appleby is one of these soldiers, who seems to be the perfect soldier. He follows regulations without question and does everything he is supposed to do, managing to succeed with minimal effort at whatever he does. It is stated that â€Å"Appleby is a symbol of American Virtue† (Heller 18) Texan is also another comparison character. Texan is up beat, excited, and full of energy. He is proud to be serving his great nation. Heller writes, â€Å" Texan turned out to be good-natured, generous, and likable. In three days no one could stand him. † (Heller 9) This statement clearly explains the behavior of most soldiers in the novel. The importance of these characters is to portray to the reader how soldiers should have acted, and also provide evidence for the rise in levels of idealism and patriotism during this time period. It is easy to tell by the soldiers in Catch 22 that attitudes needed to change. The presidency of John F.

Summary about the adventures of Aladdin Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Summary about the adventures of Aladdin - Essay Example Excited, he told his mother of the adventures. The widow took the lamp and rubbed it. Out came a genie that offered them all they wanted from that moment. Aladdin grew to a handsome man and wanted to marry the Sultan’s daughter. The genie magically helped Aladdin and his mother provide all that the Sultan asked in exchange of his daughter. Diamonds, forty slaves, and forty Arab warriors were all given to the Sultan. News of Aladdin’s fortune spread allover. He however, never told his wife of the magic lamp. One day, the wife gave the old lamp to a merchant in exchange for a new one and the genie was under the merchant’s service. The merchant whisked Aladdin’s possessions away and sent the princess and the palace away too. As he wept over his lost fortune and wife, Aladdin remembered the wizard’s ring and slid it in his finger. He requested it to take him to his wife. Immediately, he found himself in his palace and saw the princess and the wizard. He put some powder in the wizard’s tea, which led to his deep sleep. Form the story; one learns that misfortunes follow those that pay good for evil. The wizard refused to take Aladdin out of the hole though he had helped him get the magic lamp. As a result, the wizard loses everything and ends up as Aladdin’s servant. Another lesson form the story is that good actions always bring forth good rewards. Aladdin helps the wizard, and though he is not immediately appreciated, he ends up getting more than he

What's worth preserving-King Kong 2005 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

What's worth preserving-King Kong 2005 - Essay Example But paired with a brilliant script and good direction, the maker’s of Kong 2005 knew it was a recipe for success, and not just the box-office kind. No other remake of a fiction film was able to reflect realities or tell truths than the original in such a thrilling and tear-jerking fashion. And truthfully speaking, that’s what really counts. To say that the film took audiences at the edge of their seats is an undeniable understatement. Even without seeing Kong, the scene with the savages is enough to make one suddenly â€Å"goosebumpy†. King Kong then finally arrives and a screech from Ann Darrow confirms the presence of the big beast. And lo, Kong never looked more like a real gorilla. Cheers to science! Thanks to science and the filmmaker’s reference to it that kids watching the movie can easily identify with what their watching. With its massive size, huge fangs, and intimidating bearing, one might think that fear is something that’s instantly instilled in innocent minds as they realize that there are real beings bigger than their parents looking exactly like it. And spectacular as the wrestling scene was with the T-rexes, the big ape is now alone with a human being, â€Å"Is it dinner time?† But then, all fear of the girl being eaten is suddenly gone as they all see that the 50-foot monster is, indeed, the gorilla that they learned in school—it eats plants. And speaking of learning, I remember a story of a friend who shares the same sentiments as I have on the film. He watched the movie with his cousins and their families and their little nephews and nieces watched too. When it came to the particular scene I just mentioned, he laughed quietly as his cousin says to her son, â€Å"See Andre? If you want to be big and strong like King Kong, you have to eat vegetables too.† Again, cheers to science! The film goes on and we realize that Kong of 2005 is more of a gorilla than

Progressive Era Through the Great Depression Assignment

Progressive Era Through the Great Depression - Assignment Example Most of the urban towns were transformed into rural cities, and large number of people migrated to metropolitan areas to obtain higher standards of living. Many new immigrants poured in from other countries with diverse cultures and traditions (Jaycox 2005). While the progressive era was significant for the economic growth, the late 1920s marked an era of economic depression. This economic decline was the worst in the history; it spread all over the world after its origin in the United States. The prices declined drastically with considerable increase in unemployment rate. Such was the influence of this economic downfall that October 29, 1929, the day that marked the beginning of this devastating collapse, was named as Black Tuesday. Although many events took place during the period under discussion, two events can be considered as major historic turning points with a great influence on the America’s current society, economy, politics, and culture. The changes in the American foreign policy and large flow of immigrants from other nations proved to be major turning points in the progressive era through economic depression. (Jaycox 2005) American Foreign Policy and New Immigrants Prior to 1890, America followed the ideology of isolationism, and relations with the other nations were limited. The American government mostly focused on its own development and had a negligible interest in the foreign affairs. This trend, however, changed after 1890 when government policy makers adopted a more global approach and America began to influence the world affairs. This encouragement was partly due to a fact that many circumstances had changed over the years. America had evolved into an industrial juggernaut, and opening a foreign front helped the businessmen to approach the international market. Soon, the national goods were distributed around the globe, which played a major role in the economic development, global influence, and American transition into a superpower. Similarly, the flow of immigrants during this period had a great impact on the social structure of the country. This intake from diverse cultures helped formation of a multicultural environment that attracted skilled labor from around the globe. Therefore, these immigrants initially provided the unskilled labor as most of them were from poor families, but the very their presence cultivated the ground for the future intake of the more skilled immigrants who played a pivotal role in the establishment of the country. (Jaycox 2005) Women’s Right to Vote A campaign for woman suffrage in the United States is one of the highlighted events during the period under discussion. Although most of the women received their rights to vote by 1920, the western states were more liberal than the northeastern and southern states in granting women their desired rights. Few reasons can be speculated for women’s liberty in the west. First of all, women in the frontier were given more status than household articles. Many speculate that this was a result of a distinct frontier democracy or more liberal approach of the western men. But the efforts of women associations in the west were one of the important differences that can explain why women received the right to vote much earlier in the west as compared to the other states. American-Spanish War Tensions built up between Spain and the United States over the Cuban rule by the end of 19th century. America had concerns over Spanish colonization in the surrounding regions, and the incidence

Retirement Planning Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Retirement Planning - Essay Example While there are many courses of action one can take to retire, some have greater risk while others offer security. For those of us wanting to retire in the next fifteen to twenty years, risk should be tempered through proper management, diverse investing, and proper estate planning that includes a will, estate plan, and life insurance if one is not self insured through a high net worth in personal property (FINRA, 2011). How Much Does one Need to Retire? Retirement goals most often deal with time and money. In order to retire by a certain time, one must have a certain amount of money. This amount can be in a stock account, coming in as passive income, or cash flow, or be a combination of both. In order for me to maintain my current lifestyle in retirement, I will need to have an income of $4,500 with a margin of growth that meets or exceeds inflation. While many people’s expenses go down in retirement, I do not want to take any chances when it comes to matters such as healthca re, which is the reason that many senior citizens end up broke and living off of social security and, in some cases, the equity in their home through a reverse mortgage. So, while some of my current expenses, such as paying for my mortgage, will not be an issue when I retire, I want to maintain the same level of income to allow for a lifestyle that goes beyond living, and allows me to have a life so that I can travel, give money to organizations I feel are important, while having more to leave behind to loved ones. This will be accomplished through proper asset allocation in a diversified portfolio that will come to approximately three-million dollars. Asset Allocation My current asset allocation is split between individual stocks that I manage through Scottrade, a company matched 401(k), and real estate. My equity is split evenly between the stock market and residential properties, but over the next fifteen to twenty years I expect my real estate holdings to be approximately two-th irds of my portfolio. The reason for this forecast is the properties’ appreciation and growing equity. In addition to the properties’ gains, I will also acquire more properties when good deals are available along with the cash to purchase. Owning property is extremely attractive because the investment can grow while paying at least partially for itself if not in full by way of payments made from tenants. In addition to this, owning property allows investors to receive tax breaks from losses even in years when money has been made. This is done after mortgage interest and depreciation is taken into account. For example, if a piece of property is worth $124,000 with mortgage payments of $1,000 per month, and a tenant occupying the home is paying $1,150 in rent for the whole year, then the profit at the end of the year is $1,800. However, the mortgage interest amounted to $9,000, and depreciation on a piece of investment property is incurred over thirty-one years. In the c ase of this property, the depreciation is $4,000 a year. Rather than paying taxes on $1,800, a loss is shown in the amount of $11,200, resulting in a larger tax return, or lower tax burden, at the end of the year (Pascale, 2010). The advantage to being in a 401(k) is that the company I work for matches my contributions up to 3%. If my 401(k) is cut in half from a

DBMS I - The Role of Database Administrators Research Paper

DBMS I - The Role of Database Administrators - Research Paper Example Additionally, a database administrator (DBA) is an information technology (IT) expert whose particular task is to design and manage database systems and put into practice efficient ways to organize and store data. In a lot of circumstances, database administrators have to shift data from out-dated systems into new systems (DegreeFinders.com, 2011; TechTarget, 1999). In addition, the database administrator is frequently available and required to work when required. This situation carries a huge accountability. Additionally, a DBA is responsible for protecting the database for example he implements the business internet access inside the corporate. In this scenario, he needs to implement policies and security measures that no one could be able to access an illegal website at the workplace such as Facebook. Moreover, every database has one or more administrators who are accountable for upholding the entire characteristics of the security strategy. However, if the business database system is not large in size, the database administrator can also perform the tasks of the security manager. Though, if the database system is huge, a particular person or group of people can have tasks partial to those of a security administrator (Vennapoosa, 2005; Alapati, 2005; Newcombe,

Product Development and Pricing Strategies Assignment - 1

Product Development and Pricing Strategies - Assignment Example Increasing competition in today’s globalised economy has put the organization under the pressure of designing effective marketing strategy. Marketing is the process of developing and implementing the idea of pricing, promotion and distribution of products and services such that they create exchanges that generates satisfaction in the objective of the organization and individual (Ferrell and Hartline, 2010). Marketing strategy provides the best opinion to the organization regarding how it can use its resources and skills in the market place so that it can run the business profitably (McDonald, 2007). The marketing strategy is mainly concerned regarding the four P’s and the objective of the organization. Flexibility in the marketing strategy creates a positive influence on the performance of the organization (Pride and Ferrell, 2010). In a competitive economy successful marketing is all about customer focus, positioning and attaining competitive success (Lancaster and Mas singham, 2010). Classic Airlines is the fifth largest airline in the world. It has a fleet of over 375 jets that flies over 240 cities. Classic Airlines has about more than 2300 flights flying daily. It has been operating in the airline industry for more than 25 years. It has employee strength of more than 32,000. In the year 2004 the company has recorded earnings of $10 million and sales figure reached $8.7 billion. But being in a profitable business, Classic Airline has started facing some problem that has reduced its profit by significant numbers.

Gay Rights Essay Essay Example for Free

Gay Rights Essay Essay Aubri Lutz La/Lit Per. 4 Miss Gibbs 10/22/01 Should Homosexual Clubs Be Allowed On College Campus? Do you plan on attending college? College offers a plethora of opportunities to those who choose to attend. There is horseback riding club, chess club and even Pokemon club these days. However, if a person hopes to join a club based on his or her sexual preference, think again. They are not allowed on public school campuses. It is a good idea that homosexual clubs and organizations be censored. They are offensive and inappropriate. If people try to ban clubs in college based on homosexual preference, they will be closing out many other clubs to come. For example, according to the Bible study groups, The banning of homosexual clubs is a good idea, but not a logical one. It is a step backwards for our bible study clubs, it will only cause them to lash out and close down our groups, too (www.family.org). For every club out there based on sexual preference there are one hundred clubs that focus on bible study. Since bible study clubs are just as controversial as homosexual ones, they are worried that if the banning of those clubs happens, they will be next. To empower school officials to close down and ban clubs based on homosexual preference is a marvelous thought, but it empowers them to shut down appropriate clubs like the bible study groups. In addition, the Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgendered group, also the LGBT has said that, Any club/organization or school discrimination against homosexual clubs and organizations will lose funding, travel funds, meeting place and right to have a club on campus immediately (www.leaderu.com//marco). This is a comfort to the clubs of homosexuals because their rights on campuses are protected. Conversely, it is a discomfort to the clubs who do not support their ideas and ways of thinking because now they are forced to at least pretend to be supportive of those clubs. This is not sensitive to the idea that this may bring about even more tensions between organizations because of the forced pretend support. So, the organizations trying to rid college campuses of the clubs based on sexual preference need to stop and think about what other clubs they could be doing damage to first. Student-led pro homosexual groups, called gay alliances, are an on-growing  disturbance and are inappropriate to have in school. For example, gay extremists are pressuring the Trustees board to oppose other minority clubs since theirs are currently being targeted. They are threatening to, take matters into their own hands if no one steps into do anything about this. This is a dilemma because one clubs being targeted is no excuse for them to be able to discriminate against others. After all, they are upset at being discriminated against. By continuing to single out groups unlike them, they are only welcoming more upon themselves. In addition, students attending Iowa Colleges who are offended by homosexual clubs and their behaviors, have voiced their comments and been completely disregarded. One student went to the board of education and stated that, clubs that promote and praise homosexuality make me feel uncomfortable as a student in this college (www.leaderu.com/marco). His comment was totally disregarded and never brought up again. That is disturbing because the only voices being heard are those which belong to the gay groups and that is not fair. It is also a problem because students who are paying for school are not being listened to and need to be in a time of controversy like this one. People need to think long and hard about whether or not they want their college kids subjected to homosexual clubs and/or organizations. The Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgendered group is a rapidly growing group across the country. They are fighting for the rights of Lesbians Gays Bisexuals and Trangendered people. For example, the LGBT have voiced their opinions loud and clear, We are just like everyone else and deserve clubs to prove it. The struggle of the LGBT has moved to center stage since 1994, they are fighting for their individual rights on campus as well as in the classroom. Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgendered group have caused quite a stir on college campuses and that is affecting all other students learning. They need to quit. The affect it is having on bi-stander students is neither fair nor appropriate. Furthermore, We are no different than all the other student who wander this campus. Said by James Anderson, a student in Colorado. Another students first question was, Then why do you need your own club on campus? Its the LGBT population saying things like that that get other students confused. Students who do not attend homosexual clubs are forced to watch rallies in the union about things they dont  completely understand and that is not fair to them. People who choose to attend college do not need to be subjected to this whole ordeal, it should be fought somewhere besides school campuses. Clubs that applaud sexual preference and behavior are unnecessary on public school campuses. These sexual preference based organizations only cause strife and confusion for students. Since these clubs are only applicable to a small minority population of students, they are hard to support and condone; this causes tense situations.

Middle Range Theory Essay Example for Free

Middle Range Theory Essay Bank of America is the largest US bank founded in 1904, it has expanded through several acquisitions. By the end of 2009, Bank of America was the market leader serving 82% of the US population and over 53 million customers. They are positioned as number one in online and mobile banking. Their mobile banking services were launched in 2007 and have gained 4 million customers in less than three years. Acquisitions made by Bank of America prior to the financial crisis caused a very strong drop in their stock price. Customers: In 2009, 10 million customers used mobile banking and this is expected to grow to 37 million by 2014. Customers that use mobile banking are not the same as online customers. Customers that use mobile banking represent a different segment of the market that other banking customers. Security issues, a perceived low value and expense, were the primary reasons that customers did not switch to mobile banking. Potential customers were reluctant to try a new banking service that are represented an extra cost and they were also afraid of losing control of their finances. Debit cardholders were the most active users. It was convenient for them because they could check their account at any time. Customers that used this service changed their usual banking channels and as a result -the bank had a higher retention for these users of online services. Competition/Competitors: Bank of Americas main competitors were: Bank of New York Mellon, JP Morgan Chase ; Co. , Wells Fargo ; Co. , Citigroup, and PNC Financial Services. These competitors also used mobile banking to ensure good service for their customers. They used SMS, customized web browsers and apps, depending on the bank and the customers they served. Citibank and Wells Fargo had different applications customized for their target groups. General Context Considering that the banking industry is fragmented, with thousands of banks offering retail and wholesale banking services; ten of the largest banks hold 46. 4% of total deposits, Bank of America being the largest one. The mortgage crisis of 2009 led to a deep recession and spilled over into a financial crisis that affected the retail banking business. Banks started waving fees and offering additional benefits in order to capture and retain customers. Mobile banking was introduced in the US in 2007 which added costs to each transaction. However, these costs were lower than call centers and interactive voice response costs. Bank of America had three options: mobile messaging (mobile stream modification without any software installation), mobile Internet (wireless application protocol), and mobile applications. Mobile applications in particular were more sophisticated and costly. Smartphone use was estimated to grow to 46% by 2014. Development Dilemma: Bank of America has two options to handle the future of mobile banking: 1) Build new and various applications to target different customers a) Pros: i) Customers want customization in the products; this will increase retention and satisfaction. ii) Marketing strategies can be segmented into different types of clients. This increases efficiency and reduces costs. iii) Superior brand and innovation perception. a) Cons i) Cost of application creation will increase due to the different areas and type of customers at Bank of America ii) Any changes in the bank services will have to be applied to all apps. Some customers will have to download and use various apps at the same time 2) Refuse to add complexity to the current application a) Pros: i) No extra costs on building a new application ii) Customers that don? t like technology or doubt about security issues wont be affected b) Cons: i) Other banks offer better mobile apps and this will increase their competitive advantage ii) Customer satisfaction will suffer if the app is not updated and does not fulfill their needs. iii) Transactions will still be done through ATMs, Call centers and IVR, which are 4 to 11 times more costly. Opportunities: Since Bank of America is one of the largest financial institutions in United States that has millions of customers; online banking is an important feature that offers to ease transactions and provides access to billing statements. However, because of the multitude of services banks offer it is overly-complicated to provide all items in one bundle. Because of this complexity (to add all the banking features in one app for mobile banking) Bank of America should target tablet-users to provide all the banking features with different applications. For example Bank of America can provide tools like market reports for savvy investors or savings programs for households (where it is easier to keep track of expenses. ) Tablets are relatively easier to use than mobile phones. Targeting such a market at an early stage can broaden the spectrum in which Bank of America operates its mobile banking. This opportunity which targets future markets as computers are being replaced by tablets should not be forgone. Ease of access and use for customers with multiple Bank of America services, easier tracking of frauds or errors. ) Bank of America customers will be able to access a large array of services online. c) For some high-end apps a nominal fee may be charged to cover some of the technology budget. 2) Cons a) Customer information may be at risk as it is insecure to access sensitive information online for which Bank of America will have to maintain high privacy, increasing cost. b) Some of the features may still be complex and require customer support hotline. c) Customers may act on unintended transactions involving significant funds. Recommendations: Bank of America needs to improve the complexity to the current application. After analyzing the options and the opportunity, we think that Bank of America has to differentiate themselves from their competitors while offering a great service to their clients, we would recommend to increase the functionality of the mobile app. This change will bring extra benefits to the different type of clients in a single download. The company will also cut costs in the type of transactions made by the clients. The continuous growth of the mobile market especially the Smartphone use is another aspect of the recommendation. Having a mobile has become a commodity for the population. The new generation will get so accustomed to this technology that they will be able to deal with any app complexity without any problem. Bank of America has to think of its future customers, not only the current mobile technology adaptors. 1) Pros: a) Having a better application will differentiate the bank compared to their competitors b) Customers will have overall services in a single application. Mobile payment services would be added to the app and will attract and benefit many customers. d) Transaction costs will become lower as the % of Smartphone users grows (46% for year 2014). 2) Cons: a) Added complexity will discourage some customers to use the application b) Speed of the application may suffer if the customer has a bad connection or has too many applications downloaded in their mobile. c) The cost of developing a more complex application is larger and may require more expertise and training for employees and customers as well.

Influences on Child Stages of Development

Influences on Child Stages of Development Samra Saleem Unit 2: Understanding and Promoting Children’s Development In this assessment I will be describing the expected pattern of children’s development. I will be analysing how personal and external factors can influence a child’s development, the reasons why children’s development may not follow the expected patter and why early intervention is important when delays in development are suspected. Children’s development will usually follow an expected pattern; however children will develop at their own rate and in their own time. Understanding the pattern of child development can help to identify children who may have delays in their development and require additional support. I will be looking at child development and will be looking into Physical Development Cognitive Development Communication Development Social and Emotional Development Moral Development Physical development: physical development looks at how children attain physical movements. Physical movements are split into three different skills. Gross Motor Skills is the movement of larger limbs, for example using your arms or legs. Fine Motor Skills is when smaller movements are obtained such as using your hands to hold things and Locomotive Skill is when there are full body movements such as walking or running which requires the whole body to move. The following the expected stages of development in physical development for children: 0-6 months: at this stage babies are able to lift and turn their heads and growth and height from their time of birth. Baby’s weight may drop after birth will be gained quickly. 12-18 months: during this stage most children will develop strength in their legs and will begin to stand up without the help of another person and start walking. 3-5 years: at this stage children will be able to co-ordinate their movements. They are also gaining more control of their fine manipulative skills and are more competent in using material and scissors. 7-9 years: at this age children’s fine and gross motor skills are now well developed and they are continuing to grow in height. You will begin to notice that the child is able to write better and neater and have the ability of stability in their hands. 11-13 years: at this stage children will most likely go through puberty. This is when the child’s body will go through different stages of sexual maturation. Cognitive Development: this area of development looks at a child’s intellectual development, the way in which the brain processes information. Cognitive skills include memory, problem solving and imagination. 0-6 months: at this stage babies can recognise the sounds and smells of their mother and will be aware of their surroundings. 12-18 months: at this stage babies are becoming more aware of their routine for the day. At this age babies are able to play with more complex toys. 3-5 years: at this stage children’s concentration is growing in activities they enjoy and show a like into the activities which they would prefer. 7-9 years: at this stage children’s academic skills are developing and writing and reading become easier. At this age children will be able to take tasks such as problems solving and putting their skills into practice. 11-13 years: children are able to reason more and can solve more complex problems. Communication Development: this area of development looks at the way that children learn to communicate. Communication development includes reading and writing, verbal communication and non-verbal communication, such as gestures and body language. Even before children can say their first words, they are already capable of understanding a great deal of language. 0-6 months: at this stage new born babies communicate their needs by crying. Babies will start getting your attention when needed my makes sounds and acknowledge others by smiling. Babies at this age will also be able to differentiate between their parents and others voices. 12-18 months: by this age babies will be able to replace their blabbering with some simple vocabulary. 3-5 years: at this stage children’s vocabulary is continuing to increase and their speech will now be recognisable to most adult’s. at this age you will find that children are much more aware of their surroundings and how things happen, therefore they will start asking questions regarding incidents. 7-9 years: by this age children are able to communicate properly and hold full conversations and also the skills of writing and reading has also extended by this age. 11-13 years: at this stage children now have developed good reading and writing skills, with grammar becoming more accurate in written communication; therefore they will have the ability to write out sentences in the right structure. Social and Emotional Development: this area of development looks at children’s development of feelings and self-identity as well as the formation of relationships. This area of development also covers behaviour a child understanding what behaviour is acceptable and social skills such as feeding themselves. From when a baby is born and to their early childhood there are many changes which they undergo. 0-6 months: at these early years the babies will be able to establish a close relationship with their main carer and will settle in for feeding and for comfort from that individual. As the baby gets a little older he/she will begin to smile and show enjoyment in activities 12-18 months: at this stage the babies are likely to experience anxiety when separated from their carer and have fear of any strangers. Children in this age group start showing significant amount of interest in other children. 3-5 years: at this age children will begin to take more interest in other children around them and also engage themselves into play activities with them. 7-9 years: by this age children are going through the stage of making good friends which is a very important factor in a child’s life stage. 11-13 years: there will be a lot more changes in a child’s life at this stage as they are getting ready to move to high school. This could be a tough time for a child as they may need to leave old friends whom they may have a good relationship with and the thought of going into a new environment may stress them out as they will need to make new friends. Moral Development: this area of development is strongly linked to social an emotional development and covers the choices and decisions that children and young people make. The development of morality also covers how children react and behave towards other people and the principles and attitudes they adopt. 3-5 years: at this stage of development children are most likely to have difficulty in understanding what is considered as right and wrong choices and actions. 7-9 years: by this stage children will appreciate if they are given duties and responsibilities as by now they know what is expected of them. 11-13 years: at this age children will have an expanded understanding about the importance of why rules and boundaries are set and how to effectively follow them. A child’s development is shaped by both personal and external factors. The following are some of the factors which influence a child’s development. Personal factors Problems during pregnancy and birth: a child’s development occurs as soon as conception is taken place as soon as the egg and sperm meet. This is when the generic information for that child is determined. A well-known condition known as down syndrome is a condition caused when there is an extra chromosome present. This condition causes delays in a child’s development through learning difficulties and heart problems. babies can also be effected by their mother behaviour and attitude during pregnancy. For mothers who smoke, take drugs and consume alcohol during their pregnancy can have a high risk and harm their baby. Birth experiences can also have an influence on a child’s development. Babies who are born prematurely may have delays in their development process as well as babies who do not breathe instantly at birth could suffer from lack of oxygen to their brain and body. Health: a child’s health can also be determined by their generic factors. Factors su ch as poor health can effect a child’s development and strain physical strength. Disabilities: generic factors at birth could also lead to babies having disabilities and health conditions which they are born with. These disabilities and health issues will affect their development process. External factors Poverty: there is increasing numbers of children who are experiencing poverty. 1 in 4 children is experiencing poverty in the UK and is said to be increasing my 2020. This number relates to the relative poverty than the absolute poverty. Relative poverty is a comparison of income compared to the average income off households. These are requirements needed to live a daily life from the materialistic things and the personal possessions. Absolute poverty is a lack of basic human needs including food, shelter, warmth, sanitation, health care and education. A balanced diet in a child’s growth is very crucial for their development. Families who may not be able to afford much may end up buying cheap food which contains harmful substances for a child’s diet. These foods are often full of saturated fats, salt and sugar and consuming large amounts of these foods can lead obesity and malnutrition in children. Consumptions of such foods can result in the children being hyperactive and lethargic. Those who live in poor housing conditions may suffer from conditions such as asthma due to cold and damp housing conditions. Family backgrounds and ethics have a really important part in a child’s development as children will watch and learn from their parents and other family’s members whom they are around. As children grow older they will find themselves in situations where they will need to make decisions on their own. Negative pressure from friends could lead to a negative decision and action taken by the child. Emotional influences: children will succeed when their emotional needs are met and when they feel happy and secure. Physical reasons: a child’s physical growth can affect its overall development. If a child is suffering from difficulties in their growth this could lead to their physical development being affected too. Environmental factors: external influences such as their family structure and the education which they receive could also have an impact on a child’s development. Cultural reasons: all cultures hold different beliefs and values about their children’s upbringing. The difference in being treated due to your sex could play a part on a child’s development negatively. Social influences: family structures and lifestyle has been seen to influence a lot on a child’s development. For those children who see their parents going through a separation or divorce may be effected negatively and undergo stress. Disability: there are many disabilities a nd conditions that a child can be born with or develop. Each of these will affect a child in a different way and will impact to changing levels on their learning and development. Early intervention If a child has been suspected of having a delay in their development, at this stage it is very important to identify exactly what support is needed and receive appropriate help and support for the overall development of the child. Identifying these delays early enables the child to overcome the difficulties and develop in the area where support is needed. If conditions and development factors are identified within a child then there is an opportunity to get receiving support from the Early years childcare settings. Children attending these settings will be assigned to a key worker who is responsible for that child. The child will closely be observed and any areas of concern will be highlighted.

binge drinking Essay -- essays research papers fc

What Causes Binge Drinking   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Binge Drinking is an intriguing phenomenon that many college students take part in all across the country. The issue of binge drinking has been a problem on college campuses for decades. Binge drinking has many horrible effects, but the problem starts with the causes for it. If the causes could be controlled then the issue would not get out of hand. Many college students give different causes for their drinking problems, and experts on the subject have their explanations as well. The problem is, while growing through adolescence anything can become an excuse for drinking, such as  ¡Ã‚ §its Thursday the day before Friday, we need to drink ¡Ã‚ ¨ or,  ¡Ã‚ §it ¡Ã‚ ¦s the last Wednesday of the semester, lets get some beer. ¡Ã‚ ¨   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Binge drinking has different definitions but many would agree that  ¡Ã‚ §Binge drinking has been defined as drinking more than 4-5 drinks in a row in one sitting. A drink is defined as a 12 ounce can or bottle of beer, a wine cooler, a four ounce glass of wine, or a shot of liquor ¡Ã‚ ¨ (Rhodes 1). Others believe that men who consume 5-6 drinks and women who consume 4-5 drinks are also considered Binge Drinkers. Personally I do not think that sex matters, if someone is consuming multiple drinks to become highly intoxicated they should be considered a Binge Drinker.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  One article that covers the results of a national survey states that  ¡Ã‚ §Adolescents ¡Ã‚ ¦ levels of alcohol and drug use have been found to be strongly associated with peers ¡Ã‚ ¦ use. However, other studies have shown that a student ¡Ã‚ ¦s drinking was more strongly influenced by how much he or she thought close friends drank than by perceptions of the extent of use by students in general ¡Ã‚ ¨(Results 2). This is a statement that I can agree with because growing up I have watched many young people become greatly influenced by their friends. Now a days the phrase  ¡Ã‚ §peer pressure ¡Ã‚ ¨ concentrates on pressure from a direct group of friends rather than a students peers as a whole. Another reason the article gives for the cause of Binge Drinking is that  ¡Ã‚ §Students who perceive that more drinking occurs than actually does provide themselves with an excuse for drinking more because  ¡Ã‚ ¥everyone is doing it ¡Ã‚ ¦Ã‚ ¡Ã‚ ¨ (Results 2). E veryone knows that most youngsters want what every other kid has, this idea relates in the... ...nge drinking. Almost anything can become a cause for binge drinking. There are things that directly lead to drinking problems such as depression but most of the causes for it are just any old excuse. If I had to decide on main causes for binge drinking they would be depression and simple excuses that give students a reason to drink. People that are depressed usually have thoughts of giving up on life, so by drinking they are just easing their pain. Most of the binge drinking that goes on in college is because students feel that they are supposed to drink, its a college tradition in a way. This is why students will use any excuse they can to drink. Works Cited Anxiety and Binge Drinking. 30 Oct. 2000. Houser, Regan. Message in a Bottle. 30 Oct. 2000. As a proactive teacher new to the classroom I would want to be completely prepared for the entourage of first day students starting a new school year. I realize that in order to be totally prepared and ready for any problems that may arise I need to consider how to divert those problems before they manifest; by preparing myself and my classroom, and ensuring that both foster a conducive, positive learning environment I will be ahead of the game. The list of preparation tasks that I would undertake are as follows:  ·Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Make sure I have a full grasp of the curriculum and prepare as many materials and lessons as I can – for the first month at least, being sure to take all learning styles and strategies into account.  ·Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Make sure I know relevant personnel in the school, where they are located and how I get in contact with them.  ·Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Obtain a list of school regulations and procedures.  ·Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Make sure I know where supplies and resources are located and how they are obtained, including the library and computer facilities.  ·Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Make sure I know where and how everyday activities occur, such as where assignments are submitted, where the toilets are located and where to send students if they are ill.  ·Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Develop a plan or list of strategies on how I will deal with the little problems or concerns that may arise, such as late students, misuse of resources, special needs students and timetabling conflicts.  ·Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Determine a set of class rules – not too many – so that students understand what is acceptable behaviour in the classroom and what I expect of them. Display these rules in an easily accessible spot for students to see and for me to refer to at any given time.  ·Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Obtain class list and write name tags on desks ensuring a mix of student backgrounds and gender are integrated as much as possible, in an attempt to avert small cliques or groups developing.  ·Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Arrange desks so that students can work individually, in small groups or as a class, ensuring that all students can see me and the board easily.  ·Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Arrange all furniture and classroom resources so that they are easily obtainable by students without them having to climb over each other, furniture or other resources.  ·Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Locate, obtain and post pictures, posters and   any other materials relevant to the year’s curriculum, around the room.  ·Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Ensure all facilities such as fans, lights etc. are in working order, if not ensure they are fixed before school commences. Finally while resting during the summer holidays I will endeavor to read up-to-date literature on classroom management and any other areas of interest or concern for my teaching year.

This component includes articles ( a, an, the ) unreserved ( this, that, these, those ) genitives ( my, your, his, a ) . But at that enjoin is one thing we should catch up with attending. In any NP, scarce hardly one identifier whitethorn happen, it federal agency that articles, demonstrative and genitives ar in return sole. We ca nt severalize that my house only when if we use of-phrase with the genitive pronoun, we posterior show that NP in another modal value that prevail of mine .In some NPs much(prenominal) as volt cats , some(prenominal)(prenominal) books , the pre alteration here is numerical ( quin ) or quantifier ( several ) . Besides, sometimes, we sens moderate the conspiracy of these two elements in some NPs. The frequent sequences ar ordinal number numerical ( peculiarly first and tolerate ) + indefinite quantifier ( eg the first few hours ) , ordinal + cardinal ( eg the second five yearss ) , indefinite quantifier + central numerical, in particular circular lick ( eg several curtilage bulk ) ( Nguyen, 2004, p. 44 ) .To magnify the headland noun in some modal value, the pastime component, adjectives, arrest after the identifier and numerals/quantifiers. This sort is pronounced by an s added to the its concluding word ( eg my friend s bike ) .HeadThe roughly usual sort of forefront of NP is noun, further in some NPs such as She is my best friend , the head may be a pronoun of some sort, commonly a personal pronoun ( he, she, youa ) . Similarly, Jacobs ( 1995 ) stated that many NPs in English are individual signifiers dwelling possibly merely of a noun or a pronoun. When the forefront is a pronoun, it does nt necessitate any alteration, particularly the pre-modification.Kinds of pronoun exploit as the read/write headExamplesPersonal pronounHe, she, you, they, we, a . unfixed pronounPerson, something, cipher, a Possessive pronounHis, her, your, their, a unreserved pronounThis, that, aTable 3 Kinds of pronoun operation as the caput of NPPost-modificationThis portion is near often followed by phrases or clauses. deuce-ace sor ts of phrasal/clausal post-modification we frequently see is comparative spot clauses, infinite clauses, and prepositional phrases, sometimes we besides see an adjective or an adverb operation as a post-modifier in NP ( Jackson, p.15 ) .A comparative clause consists of a comparative pronoun ( who, whom, which, that, whose, a ) as a caput, which mentions back to the caput noun of NP. If the comparative pronoun s act is object in the comparative clause, we fanny exclude that comparative pronoun.Infinite clause is clause normally without topics introduced by a infinite signifier of the verb. Those elements are pose in a stable sort as shown in the above tabular array. In footings of the front elements, we have three sorts. In the place ( -1 ) , quantifiers such as tat ca , tat thay , hat thay , hat ca , ca , a.are use. Those words can happen forwarddefinite numbers mat, hai, Ba, ban, a ex-husband tat ca ban m?i sinh vien ( 1 )corporate nouns Aan, lA , bo , ba , nam, a .Ex-husband ca lA con traigeneral nouns qua?n, ao, binh, linh , xe ca , may moc, aEx-husband hat thay may mocLet s pay attending to the quantifiers such as tat ca , tat thay , hat thay , hat ca , ca , a.From the illustrations above, we can see that such those quantifiers occur forrader the caput noun. Now, taking the first illustration, is it right if we say it in such a manner ban m?i sinh vien tat ca ? Actually, in footings of grammar, it is right solely the conditional relation is disparate. The NP tat ca ban m?i sinh vien means that no pupils are left, but in ban m?i sinh vien tat ca , there are some pupils left. So, we can reason that tat ca can stand in the first place and after the caput noun depending on the speaker s attending.Diep Quang dispose ( 2000 ) stated that place ( -2 ) is the topographic point taken by word category as followersDefinite numeral/ central simulacrum ( ta cha sa l?a?ng xac Aanh/sa ta )Mat, hai, Ba, ban, m?a?i, trA?m a..M?a?i con meoEstimate quantifier ( ta cha sa pha?ng Aanh )Vai, vai B a, dA?m, m?i, avai Ba khach hangAllocating words ( ta ham y phan phai )Ma-i, mat, tang, aMa-i cong danArticles ( quan ta )Nha?ng, cac, mat, ..Nha?ng bac sAWord may whitethorn con ga nayTable 5 the place ( -2 ) in a NP in VietnameseHowever, we should pay attending that such elements as vai, vai Ba, dA?m, a can non co-exist with the quantifiers such as tat ca , tat thay , hat thay , hat ca , ca in the place ( -3 ) .In footings of the place ( -1 ) , Diep Quang Ban ( 2000 ) stated that it is taken by the deictic word cai ( ta cha xuat ) in tack to stress things mentioned in the caput noun. However, sometimes, cai is replaced by another deictic word such as con in NP con ng?a?i ay . In Vietnamese NP, cai occurs onward the caput noun and can step in between a numerical ( if there is one ) and the classifier or a step phrase. It may be preceded by other pre-noun qualifiers such as quantifiers, numbers, and articles. It must ever accord with a classifier as in ba cai cuan len kia or ba cai thung n?ac nay . Besides, cai is sometimes mistaken with the homonymic classifier cai , but it s polar from classifier cai every bit good as other classifiers in term of scattering and map. When cai precedes a count noun, the usage of a classifier is obligatory, as shown in ( a ) . However, cai can non be used before the homonymic classifier as shown in ( B )Ba cai cuan len ( correct )Ba cai cai chen ( inconclusive )Normally, with the presence of the deictic word, the noun is demonstrative equal nay , kia , ay , a . ( eg cai tha?ng nhoc nay ) . But, in verbalize linguistic communication, we frequently see that the demonstratives are omitted, like cai tha?ng nhoc .The karyon ( head noun ) Harmonizing to Dinh Dien ( n.d ) , the karyon ( place ( 0 ) ) may be a noun ( boy, teacher, cat, housea ) or a combination between a classifier ( danh ta cha loai ) and the caput noun such as con ng?a?i , quya?n sach , may say . Otherwise, t he caput noun may be a classifier followed by a descriptive free word bunch ( ta ha?p ta ta do mieu ta ) such as hai ng?a?i Aang ngai noi chuyan Aa?ng kia , nha?ng viac ban hom ba?a Additionally, words which are non nouns can besides be the caput collectable to the talk of the town wont of Vietnamese. For illustration, we can deoxidise the NP hai cac ca phe Aen into the NP hai Aen .Some Vietnamese classifiers are normally usedcaiA used for most in play objects ( cai ban, cai gha , .. )con normally for animate beings and kids ( con be ) , but can be used to depict some inanimate objects ( con dao, con A?a?ng )bai used for composings like vocals, drawings, verse forms, essays, etc ( bai th , bai hat, .. ) headstone used for stick-like objects ( cay ph?a?ng, cay sung, a )toa edifices of authorization tribunals, halls, tusk towers ( toa nha , .. )qua/trai used for ball-shaped objects ( qua chuai, trai Aat, .. )quya?n/cuan used for book-like objects ( cuan sach, quya?n wor k chi , .. )ta? sheets and other thin objects made of paper ( ta? giay, ta? bao, .. )la smaller sheets of paper ( la th , la bai, a )viac an event or an on-going procedure ( viac kinh doanh, viac ha?c, a )End elementsDoan et Al. class the terminal elements in footings of portion of address, construction, manner of connexion, hunting lodge of some elements.c.1 ) In footings of portion of addressnounlap ngoai nga?verblap giao tiapadjectivallap Aongcentral numericallap 4noun of topographic pointlap tren la?unoun of cliplap buai taipronounlap caa toiTable 6 The terminal elements in Vietnamese NP in footings of portion of addressc.2 ) In footings of constructionA chief appurtenance phrase sach vA?n ha?c Ma?A co-ordinated phrase sach nghe va noiA S-V phrase sach ma toi vaa muac.3 ) In footings of manner of connexionDirect shipway ( eg tinh tha?n thep, mat ba caua ) corroborative ways ( eg ba phim ma anh thich, bai viat ma toi vaa hoan thanh )c.4 ) In footings of the undermentioned orderThe nucleus i? However, there are button up some differences between them. For illustration, in English, we merely have merely one order a reasonably bluish disconcert but when we say in Vietnamese, there are 2 ways mat chiac vay mau xanh district attorney tra?i xinh xan and mat chiac vay xinh xan mau xanh district attorney tra?i .Furthermore, in English NP, the happening of nouns and clinchers is obligatory but optional in Vietnamese NP. So, if we translate the phrase cuan sach tren ban into Vietnamese, it will be book on tabular array . Is it right? As you see, the true phrase should be the book on the tabular array .In Vietnamese, classifiers are by and pear-shaped obligatory in numerated NP whereas in English, we do nt usually utilize classifiers before nouns, except some particular words a brace of places , a loiter of staff of life a .Ex-husband In English, we say two books but in Vietnamese, we say hai cuan sach .The following difference I want to impact is the place of noun qualifiers. In English NP, they come before a caput noun but in Vietnamese, they come after the caput noun. In Vietnamese, what comes into people s head foremost is spoken foremost i s the common regulation, which is besides a natural order of people s thought ( Dinh, n.d, p. 11 ) . Let s take a NP as an illustration. How many ways you can state the English NP a smart Korean leather coat ? We have mat cai ao khoac mai ba?ng want thu caa Han Quac or mat cai ao khoac Han Quac ba?ng long thu mai and mat cai ao khoac ba?ng long thu Han Quac mai .It seems that in the English NP, the place of pre-modifiers and post-premodifiers are non so free and flexible as that in Vietnamese NPDeduction in English knowledge and acquisitionLearners of English may hold some troubles such as how to interpret fromEnglish into Vietnamese and frailty versa due to the differences in the place of pre-modifiers and post-modifiers we have merely mentioned above ( for illustration mat quya?n sach hay a book good or a book interesting. They may besides be in chore with the order of the adjectives in a instead long noun phrase with many adjectives. Which adjective come foremost? Wh ich one will come next? Where should we set those adjectives. Vietnamese pupils may happen it hard to find oneself all the places due to the wont of puting the adjectives after the caput noun and utilizing them flexibly.Knowing clearly about English NP and Vietnamese NP, particularly the differences every bit good as the common errors that Vietnamese scholars frequently figure will assist the instructors guide their pupils right. Based on the cognition of English NP and Vietnamese NP, the instructors besides design the undertakings for pupils to unify and pattern cognition of phrases and sentences in both two linguistic communications.DecisionIn decision, although NP in English and Vietnamese has the same basic construction ( pre-modification, caput, post-modification ) , they are non the same in the word order of pre-modifica tion and post-modification. These differences are caused by the unsimilarity in thought and talking wont of English and Vietnamese. As a pupil every bit good as a teacher-to-be, this research helps me a batch. When making this assignment, I have a opportunity to consolidate my cognition of both English and Vietnamese and cognize something modern and helpful. Marketing Plan of Nike Essay

The world has a long, rich history of intertheme occupation among nations. closely international hatful dates from the prevailing age of mer brush offtilism. However, objecting mercantilism is the common idea of spate philosophies proposed by decade metalworker and David Ricardo. Both of them advocated free international backing. The recover of the zero-of-sum game was the core of mercantilism. One soil change magnitude the wealthiness mustinessiness cause an other(a) maven decreased from job. Only one could be beneficial. They judgement exports could bring inflows of wealth from and imports could lead outflows of wealth to other countries. It was this thought that apiece rustic encouraged exports and confine imports. 1? The Classical Trade possibility (1) system of exaltation Smith Absolute Advantage tenner Smith set himself against the mercantilism. He advocated free guile and proposed the irresponsible advantage surmisal. In his system, each agricultural had its own advantage for producing goods which other domain did non possess. It was this that stimulated countries to participate in the international trade by exerting the absolute advantage to obtain much benefits. Adam Smith made two assumptions First, trade only existed between two countries.Second, each hoidenish produced only two harvest-times, one product must have absolute advantage, and the other product must have absolute disadvantage. Therefore, each surface area should narrow on producing the product with absolute advantage, and then trade the absolute disadvantage product to the other country with the absolute advantage product. After trading, the disengaged, surplus resources and products of each country could be used completely reasonable. Thus, both(prenominal) countries can be beneficial from the trade, not safe one. This pulled down the rule of zero-of-sum game and created the rule of n-of-sum game.Adam Smiths absolute advantage theory successfully promot ed the international trade. However, this theory did not agglomerate with the puzzle that for both two products, one country had absolute advantages and the other country had absolute disadvantages. (2) theory of David Ricardo Comparative Advantage Fortunately, another famous economic expert David Ricardo succeeded and developed Adam Smiths theory. scantily like Adam Smith, David Ricardo also was an opponent of protectionism for national economies. He created his comparative advantage theory. The theory dealt with the problem that could not be dealt using Adam Smiths theory. The economic motives and causes international trade. According to Ricardos theory, even if a country has no absolute advantage in any product, the disadvantaged country can still be beneficial from specializing in and exporting the product for which it has the lowest opportunity exist of production. Though the two theories were proposed hundreds of years, they still play most-valuable influences on intern ational trade. Each trading country can improve productivity and the world economic is promoted. The two theories will contribute to world prosperity in the future. 2? The Modern Trade Theory Comparative advantage based on opportunity cost forms the basis of modern trade theory. The theory shows that after comparing, when the country decides to produce its advantage product, it call for to give up the other product that can come forth during the period. The benefit form the product it gives up is its opportunity cost. Here I charter a simple example to illustrate this theory. The tear for planting sift or cotton fiber, the output of rice is 500 kilogram or 100 kilogram of cotton. If we choose to plant rice, the 100 kilogram of cotton we give up is our opportunity cost. Today, the practice of trade among nations is growing by leaps and bounds. There is hardly a person on earth who has not been influenced in some way by the growing trade among nations. The theories stimulate trade between developed and underdeveloped countries that avoid the autarky. International trade increases trading countries wealth and world output. That is because with trade, the resources are allocated rationally, job opportunity increase, products lineament and variety increase and so on.
